Today, during its annual F8 Developers Conference in San Francisco on Wednesday, Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg unveiled that it will support spherical videos, as part of its new way to deliver immersive 360-degree content to its social networking platform, including support for the Oculus Rift virtual reality headset.

With the new 360-degree video format viewers will be able to interact and move around inside the film while having the freedom to naturally view it from different angles. “You’re going to be able to put on your [Oculus] headset, and just feel like you’re really there,” Zuckerberg said to attendees during his F8 keynote presentation.

Zuckerberg points out, that while many people tend to associate virtual reality with gaming first, he believes that video will actually be a much more engaging experience in the future. “This [spherical video] is a new and much more immersive type of content,” Zuckerberg explains.

The integration of 360-degree video content is a first glimpse of how Facebook will strategically begin to push immersive VR-ready content to the platform, following its acquisition of Oculus VR for $2 billion last year.

According to Zuckerberg, the company is also experimenting with live spherical videos, which attendees can experience for themselves over at its ‘Teleportation Station’. The live demo utilizes a VR headset to show off a 24-camera-view of the Facebook headquarters in Menlo Park, California.

No specific date when this new feature will be made available yet. However, stay tuned for more updates soon.
